FIRST AID
Exercise 1
Please read through this text about first aid and learn the words in bold
Principles of first aid
Knowledge of first aid is a moral obligation, because persons who are
involved in an accident and expect others to help them quickly and
efficiently should also be able to help others.
First aid assistance is even a legal requirement in Germany.
e.g.:
§34 Road traffic act:
After a road accident the driver must stop immediately to ascertain the
consequences of the accident, hold up the traffic and help the injured.
§323c Penal code:
Persons who do not provide help in accidents, common danger or emergency… are liable to imprisonment of up to one year or a fine.
Expectations of the first aider
The first aider should…
recognize what has happened
consider what danger threatens
protect the injured against further harm
raise an alarm
look after and comfort the injured
Means of communication
There are many ways to raise an emergency alarm:
The simplest, fastest and most common means of communication in an
emergency is the telephone. However the emergency call number should
always be known off by heart!
Unfortunately there is no general emergency call number. Usually
112 or 110 can be dialled.
Make sure you know which number is used in your district/town!
Correct emergency call
The first aider or person raising the alarm should remember the six
W's.
W
...ho? Who is calling? State name and address for possible further questions.
W
...here? Exact description of the accident scene , town, road, house number, floor etc.
W
...hat? Short description of the emergency incident (traffic accident, injured etc.).
The control centre has to know what action needs to be taken.
Ho...
W
many? How many victims? Knowing this the control centre can send
out sufficient response teams to the scene of the accident.
W
...hich? Which injuries or signs of illness do the victims display?
W
...ait!
Only hang up if the call is terminated by the control centre!
The control centre might have further questions.
